Let me start off by saying this : I refuse to play Candy Crush Saga (CCS). Now before Candy Crushers start stoning me, let me say that it is precisely because CCS is potentially so addictive that I do not want to risk spending hours rearranging various virtual sweets in front of my computer. But that’s not what I’m going to talk about today. What I will talk about is the various game requests I (and most of the Facebook population I’m sure) receive on an almost daily basis. From what I understand (and from my own experience playing the now-kaput Restaurant City), having friends playing the same games bestows various bonuses and power-ups in the game. Exchanging in-game gifts has become almost necessary for players to make meaningful progress in some games. Now there is nothing wrong in helping to finish a friend’s building in Dragon City if you happen to be a player, all it takes is a few simple clicks (you get a bonus for doing so too, so it’s not a completely altruistic act). But what if you AREN’T a player of Dragon City? This happened to me recently, an old friend of mine way back [...]

‘ReMag sucks. Seriously, the entire website is nothing more than a bunch of half-baked essays with sepia pictures to make the authors look smart. It is disgusting. Stop using fifteen-syllable words; you’re not a gifted writer just because you swallowed a thesaurus. The writing belongs on the pages of a primary student. I only wish ReMag was a printed magazine because I am running out of toilet paper.’ Interested in seeing how internet fame works? Post this as a Facebook update or Tweet, particularly on ReMag’s page. Do the same in a few other places as well; better to make sure no one misses it. Within minutes, perhaps ten to twenty comments will gather under your post like vultures drawn to carrion, most of them irate. You’ll probably get a kind email from Henry as well. Wait a couple hours more. Check out the Re-tweets and Shares. You’ll be on the Newsfeed of at least a dozen individuals now whom you have never met. For best results, add in racial or political epithets. If you’re gunning for widespread fame, these babies work like nitroglycerin. You’ll be propelled through the corners of social media and micro-blogs on the fuel of vitriol. [...]

I know, I know. You’re probably thinking “so what?” or “you’ll never take them from me! Ever!” But hear me out. We all like to be comfortable. When we go through our daily routine of springing out of bed, glancing at our alarm clocks, and gasping in horror at the realization that class is in 10 minutes on the other side of campus, there is no way in hell we’re going to think about what we’re wearing. We just throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and dart out of the door. The question we ask ourselves before we leave has shifted from “Do I look good?” to “Do I look presentable? Will I scare people away?” However, for me, it wasn’t just about being in a rush and having no time for my appearance. It was about the person staring back at me in the mirror. She was awkward and lanky; her boney, protruding shoulders and two twig-like arms. Her hips may as well have been non-existent, and her legs were as fat as the average girl’s arms. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t look at myself with scorn while standing in front of the [...]

April 17, 2013. Being a part of history feels amazing. Before this, I’ve never been one with the rest, cheering along for something I feel strongly enough for, while sitting nervously on my bed and watching with bated breath. When the moment came, the jubilance was undeniable. People broke out in song, cheers and hugs. Pokarekare ana. The waves are breaking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW4DXOAXF8U Why the fuss? It’s because, for the very first time, the idea that I could get married suddenly became so much more than a dream. It became something I could look forward to; no longer something I hoped for as I lay in bed alone at night. Imagine something you’ve always wanted to do, but almost never in your wildest dreams pictured it actually happening. That was how I felt. The same way ten years’ worth of expectations and excitement burst forth when I finally caught my all-time favourite band live in concert. It was pure happiness. And joy. And every other bright, shiny, colourful thing in this world coming together. A rainbow unicorn, if you must have it. And it wasn’t just me. A majority of New Zealanders found hope that night. Gay, straight, transgender; none [...]

There are a few moments when you arrive at a point in your life without quite realising how you got there. The divergence of two lines, though only deviating at a minuscule angle, would eventually be very obvious the further they are from the point of origin. In the same way, slight disparities in the person you once thought you were and who you are now widen into a gaping chasm as time goes by. It does not happen overnight; it is a gradual change, imperceptible in its course of happening. You wonder how the person in the mirror looks the same – perhaps with a few more lines – and how different you feel when you look into it. You wonder about the time you would prance and preen in front it. And the time all you wanted to do was let your fist fly into the shimmering and blurred surface as tears of pain, both physical and emotional, form curtains around your vision. You wonder why you did not do it after all. Maybe the mess was not worth it. You wonder about that one day when you see your reflection, you stop wanting to hurt it. You [...]

Quotes that inspire… We used to come across them in books, sometimes in newspapers, magazines, but nowadays, they are everywhere. They pop out in your social media each time you scroll through your news feed, they can be in smart phone apps, and sometimes you even see lecturers flash them in their presentations. A friend of mine has a mandarin app installed in her iPhone. It is full of quotes of different varieties and gets updated with new quotes every few minutes. Reading them became my favourite pastime. There were quotes on success, love, kinship, friendship, motivation, and lots of them speak of life. They make so much sense, and a lot of them could lift your spirits when you are feeling down. Some of them speak of experience of others, and these, to some extent, help us in learning from mistakes and achievements of others. However, despite how ubiquitous these golden quotes are, how many of us really make good use of them and start making a difference in our own lives? Theoretically, these quotes that inspire and those good old sayings can do us a lot of good. But in real life, most of us come across them [...]

Is censorship is the best means of defense against unwholesome values? Perhaps my response would have been none other than an unmistakable ‘yes’ provided that the line is rephrased without the word ‘best’. In other words, I am rather convinced that censorship is not the best means of defense against unwholesome ideas. A firm believer of the idea that everything possesses its own pros and cons, I do not deny the positive edges censorship boasts. Nevertheless, the unfavourable consequences censorship brings about certainly outweigh its benefits at any moment of time. Commonly referred to the official acts of evaluating a materials prior to being disclosed to the public, ‘censorship’ involves suppression of features deemed provocative, sensitive, offensive or destructive; while the phrase ‘unwholesome ideas’ can be described as behavioral principles which disregard moral well-being. With these depictions, it is visible enough to construe ‘censorship’ as a means to stop the influence of ‘unwholesome ideas’ from poisoning society’s minds. For instance, through censorship and film ratings, underage youths can be held back from being exposed to pornographic, violent and religious-sensitive parts in films before developing required maturity to judge these elements. Such a move also guides parents in selecting felicitous substances [...]

Off the coast of an unnamed beach, you feel like an idiot – You wonder what brought you to this exact moment in time, you wonder how it is the case that you paid for this. 20 kilos of excess baggage sit on you, seemingly preparing you for a death underwater – The rushing sea breeze assaults you in the face, buffeting you repeatedly - Mentally, you steel yourself as the moment comes, and others fade into the background of the deep ocean you’ve known only in TV documentaries. Fluid oedema – Rabies – Drowning, choking… Haemolysis and fluid dehydration? It makes no sense, but every water-induced permutation of death, cultural hegemony and death sifts through your mind. You say prayers, as you remember the funeral of captain Ahab, re-enacted in an underwater prison; debating causality, studying the meaning of your life, you breathe, and you console yourself that life was meant for stupid decisions like this. Push. You fall off a boat, into water you’ve only known to drown as to bathe in; on the face of the boatman who was your final association with dry land, you cannot help but see a small dose of schadenfreude aimed in [...]

Dear Readers, The first day of June this year happens to be the day commemorating the birthday of His Majesty the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong. I would like to take the opportunity to say that while all of us may have political differences and ideologies, it is time for us to move on whether you agree with the results of the general elections or whether you disagree with the people who feel outraged at the current political scenario. Constant political bickering among ourselves may end up widening the divisiveness and hinder constructive progress. No matter how you view our current politics to be, the fact remains that we are at a point where people’s voices are much louder than what they were before. If you have exercised your right as a voter at the ballot box, I applaud you for making that soft voice heard as loud as thunder. If you were a first-time voter, I invite you to relate your voting experience here! You can submit a guest article to be published, or you could consider writing a short column where we will then combine multiple entries into one post to be published. This month, we have Zeina Yacoub who [...]
