The sidebar is pretty useful for me. A quick glance at it gives me updates on the stock market, the news, the computer condition with regards to CPU and memory usage, and the time. It makes an efficient usage of space on a wide screen monitor, since there is a lot of unused space while editing a word document or surfing the net anyway.
And I wouldn't advise turning of windows update as well. Security patches are made available every month, and it is imperative that the PC is kept as secure as possible by patching it. The automatic updates service is idle most of the time anyway, and won't take up much memory.
