it's just another study abroad program.
the key reason yale chose NUS, from the article, is that Spore has a good SEA study center and yale students don't need to learn a new langauge.

msian universities teach in malay, as fas as i know.

If everyone takes a good look at it, those students would spend a few days in Melaka, as part of the program. And I would look at it as part of study abroad program, which most universities have, and I have no doubt that Yale do send its students for study abroad everyone.

For Cornell, students do go study abroad to over 40 countries every year.

And it is something that I hope our IPTAs and IPTSs could work hard to seek more of such student exchange/ study abroad program.

It is more than just studying abroad. Yale has an agreement with NUS to offer joint degree programs to students from both Yale and NUS, i.e. both students from NUS and Yale will have a chance to graduate with a degree from both universities in the future!!

Imagine a student at NUS paying just SGD 8000 for a Yale degree??

Perhaps it could be due to Straits Times over-sensalizing the matter.

But judging from the news from Yale (link on the first post above), it is more of a students exchange, and the students would be taking 2 courses during their 4-week in NUS, with courses of "Introduction to Southeast Asian Studies" and "History of Southeast Asia".

I don't know about the negotiation, but I guess it would be very difficult for a university, like Yale University to offer joint degree in Asia, unless it is for a couple particular departments, where NUS is stronger than Yale.

Joint degree? The only thing I heard about the Yale in Singapore thing was that 10 Yalies get to take two classes in Singapore, during summer. And 10 NUS students take two classes in Yale, for the summer.... That's all....

I don't think that it's not so much a degree, but just a chance to take classes as part of their study abroad experience.
