I'm helping a friend of mine to post this:

"hi i'm a JPA scholar in UIUC, in my sophomore year. i seriously think most of the people who post messages in the forum do not exactly know what they are talking about. If you are unsure about certain things, the best way to find out an answer is to ask people who have experience, and not just speculate. Some people try to be smart and end up misleading others, which is a bad thing."

there's some truth in that message... but then again it happens in every forum too. In another tech forum that I frequent, a lot of newbies as well as senior members tend to become hot-headed... most semm to be talking through their a$$, with no real knowledge on matter that they are talking about...

but then again, as comparison I think Recom seem to have less of those annoying pests...

I see no connection between the subject of the thread and the first post of the thread...(maybe it's just me, just woke up)

anybody care to connect the dots?

yea i agree, the title and the posting seem to be of different topic. spring... no offense.. UIUC blurring you isit.. woi.. the title of your thread do not seem to have anything to do with your posting. But, all the same, I have to say that i agree with your friend.. RECOM is soon to become a huge joke if all this persist. It cracks me up what some people seem to come up with! And, this is most especially when it came to the US education stuff and all the 'which university is better".. those who study here know that you cannot compare.. each university has its bad and good points... oh and another thing... this place is filled with hypocritical and should i also so egoistical people.. this is just my humble opinion. I think there are others who feel the way i do as well.

if you think forums are that bad, you should try our IRC. I still believe that there are more idiots and short-tempered 3-year-old adults per-capita on IRC than there are anywhere on the earth.

The thing is that a lot of these so called three year old adults like to release a bit of tension by posting provocative posts.
But there are boundaries. I dont think insulting people is on.

well, regarding the topic of this post, it's not of my choice also. I've just posted what my friend wanted to voice out. And there's a second part to that, which is quite long, so here we go:

" My friends both in Malaysia and the States: I am not trying
to provoke anyone in this forum, in fact I think respect for
each and every single individual is an integral part and
important virtue in life. Somehow I feel that many people do
not really know what they are 'asking' or even what to ask to
be able to make a good decision on which Uni to choose.
Remember: You shouldn't just go to the school you think is
best (e.g. has a higher ranking), but you should go to a
school that is best for YOU. I am not 'made for Harvard' so
if I have gone to Harvard I would have suffered in the last
two potentially torrid years, and I would not be doing as
fine as I am doing in UIUC. I am developing fine in UIUC, and
I think I have come to the right place. I would say as a
general rule, Ivy League schools are most of the time better
than other so-called 'top schools', so if you get accepted
into I.L.S. then congratulations. But still remember the
general rule: Don't go to the best U, go to the U that is
best for You. Of course, nobody would really reject MIT if
accepted.

Most of you don't really seem to understand how the ranking
system works. The schools are ranked based on many factors,
such as affordability, campus surrounding, faculty
reputation, competitiveness, etc etc etc. So going to the #1
school doesn't necessarily mean you will get the best
education. Also, different colleges (college is used
interchangeably with school and Uni in this context) have
different strength. Talk about Civil Engineering, Americans
know UIUC. Talk about Econ, people know Harvard. Talk about
Mechanical Eng, people know Georgia Tech. Business, U Penn.
Chemical Eng, Wisconsin. Accountancy, UIUC. Psychology, Ohio.
Basketball, maybe North Carolina. So don't try going to MIT
to do Business just because it is famous school... I dont
even know if they offer Business over there...

Finally, Ivy League schools are a good place to train
yourself and develop into a dependable individual. If
admitted, you will be competing with some of the most
creative minds around the world. The quality of an education
really depends on the competitiveness among your peers. If
your peers are doing excellent, then you'll be motivated to
do as well. If you come to a public school like UIUC, then
maybe not as much competition. But that doesn't mean the
quality of education is any lower than that of an Ivy League
school. But of course, like I said, Ivy League is always the
first choice. As far as other 'top non-IVY LEAGUE' schools
are concerned, there is NOT MUCH DIFFERENCE between them.
You'll probably be getting the same type of education no
matter which one you go to. A guideline I think works well is
to choose the school that has a higher ranking in YOUR MAJOR
and not a higher OVERALL RANKING.

It is also unfair for people from one school to criticize
other schools or promote their own school and say that their
schools are the best, because they do not really know what is
going on elsewhere. So if you have heard anyone from Harvard
saying how bad MIT is, then just forget about what you just
heard. But I will say as far as I know, Civil Engineering
Researches in UIUC is very very extensive (extensive is NOT
a 'comparative' word)

Thanks for reading.

There might be more to come, if i have time in the near
future. I promise I will be talking about a BS Degree in the
States as the title suggests. I just have not reached that
part yet.

Dan"

The point of a good education is to enable us to distinguish between good and bad ideas, between facts and myths, and between the right and wrong. While almost everything comes in shades of grey, that should not discourage us from voicing our opinions on matters. If you feel that someone wrote a misleading statement, point it out and explain your reasons for it (I've done it on numerous occasions in ReCom).

Do not be afraid to make mistakes by not voicing your honest opinions. If you're unsure, be honest and say so, but that doesn't mean you should remain silent.
