An excellent way to familiarise yourself with some corporate firm names would be to trawl through the Business/Property News sections of the newspapers. Get a copy of today's newspaper, and if you have a stash of yesterday's/last week's/etc copies, then even better.

Also, yes, there's all that talk about "roflmao top UK universities is an oxymoron -- the party is in the USA now", but the sad/happy truth [depends on how you play this to your advantage] is that as a general rule of thumb, employers in Malaysia are VERY UK-centric when it comes to hiring people. So don't worry; you'll be fine.

Just a little tidbit for you since you appear to be so keen, I know that Sime Darby sponsors chemical engineers, and they quite like UK universities. Good luck!

rule of thumb. forget about those big companies who have official scholarship program. the 1st question arise will be, why dont you apply using the normal procedure? explain. and then i'm sure there will be no good reasons for that. they will just ask you to try next year, which is what you don't want. i.e. shell, khazanah, petronas....

but the dilemma here is, these big companies who are interested in sponsoring student will surely hold a formal scholarship program already. so, you can only aim companies who have never thought of that, and persuade them to do that. but thats going to be tough unless you are some MIT under-18 genius or equivalent. but then to be that smart, youu would have cruised through khazanah etc interview in the first place.

Well I'm not yet a multi-billionaire with dedicated trust fund, so I'm not in a position to grant scholarships.

I wouldn't have resorted to looking for these companies if I had received offers already, no? Thank you for your concern, though.

I am really keen on approaching some private chemical/engineering-related firms to request for sponsorship. I have no knowledge of this sorts at all, so whatever I have been doing is just a list of things that I think should be done in order to get the ball rolling. Allow me to list them down:

1. Downloaded the T.H.E. Graduate Employers' Rankings, and googled for chemical/engineering-related companies in Malaysia (one of which was schlumberger).

2. Prepare a formal letter addressed to their Manager of HR Dept., and prepare a proposal for them.

3. Keep asking for friends' parents or acquaintances to keep an eye on possible "benefactors" (i.e. companies who are willing to sponsor students abroad, etc).

So far my progress on the first two have been rather slow. Mainly because I myself am not sure of how the format of the proposal should be -- I based my proposal with the proposal of the academics club in my college -- and I don't exactly know what am I supposed to do with the rankings I have obtained.

I would appreciate if anyone could shed a light on this. I am not going to let go of my UK dreams without returning a couple of swings. Thank you!
Can you share which UK unis? Thanks.

I don't mean to sound like someone who's expecting an answer from the internet whilst not doing anything, but I'm really not sure whether what I'm doing at the moment is right or wrong. I definitely have the commitment to trawl the hundreds of engineering firms in Malaysia on this website, but I can't help but feel that I'm shooting blanks, or rather an idiot on the loose. Not to mention I am think my proposal won't come across as a professional one -- I'm not even sure whether to list "strength of Malaysian currency" as one of the opportunities to send students for a degree abroad.

There has to be SOME way out there. What other websites can I seek for advice on this?

Well they've stopped sponsoring Pre-U graduates for an overseas degree. I am, however, being considered for their local university scholarship. Let's hope for the best.

don't touch on currency unless you know what you are doing. pro tips: malaysia currency is controlled by the government, they change 3 times per day against major currencies. thats why forex brokers nvr trade with mys because it is like betting on a doctored football game. the relative 'strength' in myr is because of the euro debt crisis right now. Euro is at the verge of declaring disband (a bit exaggerating but i believe this will happen if greece's opposition win this week), UK boe statement this morning show 0.8% growth and over 2% inflation rate in 2012 also throw pound to a very low level. usd...is doing pretty well as the safe haven for those crowding out investor in the west.

best of luck! also, shall they are interested in your proposal, you should be expecting extensive interview sessions with their director and human resources department.

But I haven't even decided which corporation to target yet! I have been going through Malaysian engineering companies, but I couldn't decide which one to approach. Amongst the companies which I THINK worth a try are:
OCPI
MMC Oil & Gas Engineering
Schlumberger

So my questions are:
1. How do I go about selecting potential companies to approach? What other potential companies would you suggest to me?

2. Is it too late to give this sponsorship hunt a try? My course starts in September and I have to accept an offer from one of the 4 universities by next month. Which raises the question: which university would the companies prefer (UCL or Manchester)?

i suggest u go find big names around the city of kuala lumpur, make an appointment with the hr department of the company and present your proposal to them. I'm also someone in your position and might was planning to ask for sponsorship from private companies too. However, i have my a levels exam right now so i'm very busy at the moment.
