No Kidding. Malaysia Is Ranked No.1 In Asian Countries in English Proficiency.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today
that he is proud of Malaysia''s position in English proficiency for non-native
speaking Asian countries
"(I am) very proud to see us (Malaysia) in 1st spot in English proficiency

Haha...ironic isn't it Malaysia is at the top spot when Filipino maids can have better command in English compared to Malaysian undergraduates. But of course, i do not imply all/everyone. Curious about the methodology used in conducting this research.

I hope this changes people's mindset about setting improving English as the top priority in local universities, and also the necessity to teach Science and Mathematics in English only to improve English.

While it's a good pat on our back, do note that the result is about *non-native speaking* Asian countries. A lot of Malaysians nowadays are from English speaking background so this notion of non-native speaking status is in doubt, especially judging from the fact that Singapore is not even included in this study.

Our PM has suggested recently that schools may be given the authority to choose the medium of instruction for Science and Maths. Hopefully, this is not just one of the pre-election goodies.
