also, a source from my friend who just graduated from UM economics master. To be able to join the research analyst team in Bank Negara (great impact on the economy of a country as they are the policy makers), the entry requirement is a Phd, few research papers and preferably had lecturing experience. the phd can be in economics, maths or finance related. so sadly she cant apply to that department and she dont want to work in a less interesting department, she took up the offer in ING as research analyst.

Haha oh yeah, by the way, if you want to be a great economist who are able to participate in policy-making, you should have at least a PhD in Economics. I was told that to be an economist, one must acquire a Phd in Economics. Well, guess it's true afterall.

Economist, investment banker, management consultant and even a quant if your are a die-hard maths lover dont look down upon mathematician ie. those quants, those are the backbone people of hedge funds and basically the ones who are manipulating the financial market, i guess nicholasng925 here, our brother, can give us alot of insights too hahaha... I have a cousin who works in London for a hedge fund, and her boss owns an island, yes, you did not hear me wrong! he owns a freaking island or maybe islands lol...so if you are passionate about money, finance and maybe about how capital flows, why certain business deal are made in this behaviour, how economical decisions are related with poltiics and gigantic businesses and so on...Economics is for you.

Thanks brothers for your opinion..=)

Seriously I am kinda not sure whether I should take up economics. I am a bit lack of security because I am not sure about the career options after graduating. I am a STPM leaver, from science stream but with economics as my 5th subject. I found economics at form 6 level is quite interesting, but I know that it's very very basic thing compared to what I am going to learn at undergraduate level.

After reading opinion from you all, somehow feeling better. XD

I got the offer from NZ and Australia but honestly not going due to the costly tuition fee and living cost. Maybe I will go for University of Nottingham Msia Campus. Sorry that I know it's not so related to the thread, but any advice from seniors?

Well it's never been easy to be one of them. They have to go through years of dedicated tertiary education and gain experiences along the way. I wouldn't recommend anyone to be a quant if you don't like dealing with algorithms and computers.

Well Economics in University of Nottingham Malaysia campus isn't that bad neither! I have friends doing Economics there and I think they are doing quite well.

i think most important is if you love it or not. you need to be truthful to yourself because going for just a high pay job that you don't enjoy, you wont be good in it, and ended up not getting as high pay because you are not passionate/good in it. if you think it is interesting, then just go for it because it is something you love. and there are a lot of ways to enter the economics and finance world, not just a simple economics degree. if you are more to the technical side, then go for maths or algorithm stuff. My econs lecturer told me economics degree in UK, most of the classes are maths. calculus is a huge part of economics degree and he hated it.

p/s which is also part of the reason why he ended up as a lecturer.

OH, Hmmm....science stream, great! well, are you interested in engineering then, cos my suggeestions is, if you are to stay in malaysia, better to do chemical engineering, as it is one of the most indemand job now in Malaysia, since Malaysia oil companies like Petronas are exploring more oilfields back here in Malaysia,so i guess job opportunities are abound thou. For Economics, im not really sure about the job prospects here, if you can, maybe you should also top it up with a finance apart from economics alone, as economics and finance would be just a perfectly fine combo for you to enter banking should you do in future.

Yep! One more thing to consider whether you like Economics or not, is whether you like maths or not. Economics degree is very mathematical inclined especially in the UK, as I'm not so sure of what entails in local economics degree. For me personally, I think I will be more inclined towards technical side, so yes I would definitely go for it.
