So a piece of news...

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...797&sec=nation

Looks like they're only going to implement the modular system for the 2012/2013 batch, and they'll have three semesters.

Welp. Time to put STPM on my list of "pre-u options".

Can one get into a public uni with a-levels? If nt, then maybe STPM would be the more logical choice, even if you do get a waiver for your a-levels. cos unless you do really well at a-levels and secure a scholarship, your degree is gonna cost you cos you'll have to do it privately. Whereas with STPM both the pivate and public option remains open to you.

Anyway matriculation results out tomoro, so fingers crossed people!

I was told by a UM representative at an edufair that it is possible to get in with A-levels, but obviously it will be much harder to do so and you'd have to write a letter of appeal. Or something.

I'd like to take STPM just to keep UM open as an option (I sorta refuse to go to any other public uni lol), but my parents are nervous, and I'm nervous, and the thought of an extra 18 months of school life is pretty dull.

Speaking of 18 months, why is STPM perceived to have a longer duration than A-levels when both pre-u programmes take 18 months to complete? Is it the timing, the intake months?

And when do the official STPM results usually come out =o I'm afraid I'd miss out on intake periods for private universities while waiting for STPM results to apply for a public university.

Haha btw I saw that you mentioned MCKL earlier, I'm starting my A-levels there in July. 100% off, cos I'm doing arts subjects. Quite an okay place. Nice people.
Anyway, yea 18 months of school, with all that koko crap, plus a super had course (STPM is super hard btw), isn't the most inviting prospect. But it's still a good option, especially for bright people who just missed out on a scholarship and don't wanna spend big bucks on a private pre-u course. Everyone recognises it, even the big Singapore unis. But I don't know about the arts options. My school's form 6 only has science I think.

And to answer your question, it's cos they only start in like June, whereas you can start your A-levels privately in January without having to wait for your SPM results. Also, STPM results only come out a week before SPM results(which is like March), but then again, A-levels results don't exactly come instantly either. Still a wait for those.

And you can use your forecast STPM results to apply for admissions and stuff. No worries!

But you get through SPM with flying colours kid, and you got nothing to worry about. haha JPA scholarship or something will secure your future for you.

So the number of As you need for the scholarship is according to what subjects you're taking?

What if I were to split it evenly and take English Lit., Law, Biology and Chemistry

Ah, I see. So that means you have like 5 months of doing nothing before STPM, haha.

Eh, I'm kinda averse to the idea of being bound to the government . Don't they usually pick the kids who want to be doctors/engineers/etc. science? I plan on doing an English Literature or Communications course.

I did say that I want to take STPM if they're making it modular, and now that I know they will, I still do want to take it. I'm just no very confident in my studying abilities and neither are my parents. I think they'd like the idea of not having to shell out thousands for pre-u if only they were assured that I wouldn't completely flunk it.

Yea if you take totally science, you only get 100% off for 10A/A+. But I don't know about a combo, I asked them on their website and they didn't really give me a clear answer. At worst, the science scholarship terms would apply. So you'd have to get 10A/A+ for 100%. That kinda sucks, if true. =/

Haha most people get jobs. But some, like me, get booted off to NS =(. When we get back we have two months to relax before the hell that is Form 6. lol

Oh no, they have all sorts of courses. Everything from Law, to Journalism to everything you can think of! haha but be careful about your BM. That was my sole B+, and it disqualified me from applying for anything. I feel so deprived! lol

Haha I don't think you'll flunk it! You seem like a intelligent enough girl. Plus form 6 teachers really know their stuff. No can-barely-speak-english young ladies who look less confident than their students haha. You'll have to put in a lot of effort to excel, but people say that the cream of the Form 6 crop, are the best our country can offer. So take up the challenge! haha but if you can get a waiver anywhere, take it lah lol.

It's an option. A good one.

Yeeah, I think I'll decide after I get my SPM trials result - then I'll discuss this with my parents. I hope there's a good school in KL that offers STPM Arts stream, no way am I going into the science hell hole >_> (well I might want to take Biology...)

No NS worries for me - I'm thin as a twig and I have scoliosis (spinal curvature) so if I did get picked I can get out of it due to medical reasons and not being physically fit enough.
