1) Absolutely nothing, unless you consider Lynas = harmful radiation = unclean to be any sort of link.
2) Because Lynas hasn't demonstrated that it has a comprehensive plan for long-term waste management, although I suspect that even if it did, plenty of people would still oppose it. Sigh.
In a way it's die if they do and die if they don't. If they wanna ship the waste out - no can do, Australia won't take it. But keep it here and people shout even more - oh why should we take something another country doesn't want? Even if there was actually a way to manage it well and even make use of it.
(Which to be honest, they haven't quite done. But still)
The anti-Lynas sentiment is something that's been played up, so it'll pretty much continue to exist even if the company had all its details in place.
