in malaysia, politician is one of the most profitable job EVER if you include underground and other relationship benefits. same as china, theres a recent article that most of the privatized national companies in china are owned/ran by the past president's children and yeah, thats billion dollar companies dominating the country with government protections. their kids probably wont go that far if not for their parents private relationship.

My econs lecturer told me economics degree in UK, most of the classes are maths. calculus is a huge part of economics degree and he hated it.

p/s which is also part of the reason why he ended up as a lecturer.
Erm..economics-related job is a high-paid one? I don't know about that but wish to know the approximate salary for a fresh graduate. I understand that a degree is just like a passport to get myself a job but about how much I can earn, I believe that it depends on ability too. @@

Yeap I agree with you, I wish to have a job that I am really passionate with. No need to become a great economist though. I think I like mathematics and economics, somemore I prefer office jobs.

For Economics, im not really sure about the job prospects here, if you can, maybe you should also top it up with a finance apart from economics alone, as economics and finance would be just a perfectly fine combo for you to enter banking should you do in future.
After my SPM, I was in dilemma because I found that I like both science and business, so I couldn't make a decision between them. Finally I chose science stream in form 6, and studied economics myself, but after my stpm, I still cannot make a choice. @@ I like mathematics, economics and physics. But chemistry is really a no-no for me,haha,I can see the potential behind chemical engineering but it will not be my choice.

Thanks and I will consider to take up some optional modules related to finance and management.

Maybe you should take up electronics engineering and study a few business modules. Come your graduation you can perhaps sidetrack a bit and come up with a great product and start-up a company ?

funnily, certain jobs requirement, they will hire acc/fin/econs/commerce graduates... definitely not very typical economics type of job. i guess econs graduate don't differ much from accounting/finance graduates, probably depends what field you end up in, i suppose. then again, i'm not working yet, no idea.

I have a cousin who works in London for a hedge fund, and her boss owns an island, yes, you did not hear me wrong! he owns a freaking island or maybe islands lol...so if you are passionate about money, finance and maybe about how capital flows, why certain business deal are made in this behaviour, how economical decisions are related with poltiics and gigantic businesses and so on...Economics is for you.
The truth is if you want to be in a hedge fund/Ibanking/consulting etc, a degree in economics/finance/accounting/business is not a prerequisite. I have done all of them, and I can attest to this based on my experience. I believe the most important thing is to pursue a field where you are most passionate about and the money will follow after that.

If you like to learn more about how capital markets work, a finance degree might be more appropriate. If you want to understand about the broader economics issues (such as supply and demand, capital flow, etc), then economics might be a good choice.

You don't need to be a mathematician/quant person to be in a hedge fund. Although we like people with engineering/math background, we still look at people with history major, etc as long as they are good/comfortable with numbers. I could not care less about your degree if you cannot think logically under pressure. At the end of the day, your passion and interest matter more than anything else and they will show during the interview/first few weeks of your work.

Good luck!
