Why do you want study oversea?

As you can see on the title, what is the reason do you want to study in oversea? What is the difference study in local university?

teaching method (lecturer quality), emphasis in class (to learn or to get good grades), to learn how to use the calculator or to learn the theory behind it, atmosphere (classmate overall standard), better job prospect in other country (if in malaysia, the pay difference is not worth the price for oversea education but in oversea, a local degree might not even be recognized).

University teaching in Malaysia is generally very exam-directed. The plus side of this is that learning objectives are often very clear and easy to follow, though it actually muddles the whole point of learning.

On the other hand, teaching in Western countries is very much geared towards learning for the sake of learning. This may sound pleasant but it can actually be pretty frustrating, especially when you try to figure out what's important and what's not.

Aside from the obvious academic reasons, some people want a change of scenery. Some find the quiet country sides of most UK universities to be very conducive in studying. Little but sufficient entertainment for free time, different weather climate, more open local populace and less hustle and bustle makes for a tranquil environment to enjoy and study at the same time. Some people go there for the experience of meeting new people. Certain universities are known in the UK for having one of the most colourful student populations. US universities are as Young has implied, are geared to more everyday and real-life applications of your knowledge rather than just exams. The difference in standards is also significant. My friend is the junior of one of the only Yale undergrad accepted from Malaysia (some of you may know him) and he tells me that it's very tough there. Not even pre-university is enough to prepare him for the course weight there. Another good reason is job opportunities. What might not be appealing here in Malaysia is somewhere else, and at a reasonable cost to bare both financially and in other terms.

The chance to expose yourself to a different culture, mentality and vista which is worth a whole lot to a young person just starting out in life.

the learning outcomes is same or not from what we learn in local university?

depends a lot on what course you are taking...for outcome, some of my friend felt bare minimum difference in accounting because they are taking the same exam, syllabus as local etc..

the process of learning is very different tho. especially for natural science subjects. liberal art college in general in USA is known as the best Tertiary education because they let the student explore themselves before choosing a course so no matter you want to become a doctor or accountant, you need to have the same basic knowledge in everything.


but then, One man's meat is another man's poison. i've plenty of friends who prefer to study local (and financial is not the constraining factor). they simply think its not justified from their pov, i.e. for the extra few hundred thousand you pay, the extra thing that you obtain is not worth that money. or, they don't want to leave home etc..
